Mumbai University informed of over 900 fake degree cases since June 2012

After the recent arrest of a paanwalla stationed outside University of Mumbai's Kalina campus for supplying fake degrees, university officials have received a lot of flak about the regulations in place. The fact that MU staff members were involved in the scam has caused a stir and many questions are being asked about the action that will be taken against the perpetrators, but the answer still stands unclear.

Keeping this in mind, Pune-based activist Vihar Durve submitted an RTI seeking information on the number of complaints received by MU via inquiries, police complaints, correspondence calls/letters, etc since 2012. The reply, sent from the office of Controller of Examinations highlights how over 900 complaints have been received by the department within that time frame. In the year 2012-13, a total of 252 complaints were received followed by 242 in 2013-14, the highest of 274 in 2014-15 and 136 complaints till July 2015.

What's worse is that there's no disclosure on action taken in any of these cases. "The RTI reply only discloses that FIRs were registered at Bandra-Kurla police station but nothing beyond that. No mention of the status of these complaints mentioned either. What's the use of filing complaints when no action is being taken?" asked Durve.

University officials maintained that main action has to be taken by the police whereas whatever can be managed by university has been implemented.
