Two people were brutally murdered in the wee hours of Wednesday, while they were sleeping under the Turbhe flyover on the Thane Belapur road in Navi Mumbai. After registering a case in the matter, the Sanpada police detained a suspect in the case, who is currently being interrogated.

The two deceased have been identified as Sandeep alias Bala Gaikwad, 22, a resident of Anandnagar in Turbhe and Sameer Aslam Shaikh, 20, a resident of Hanuman Nagar. While Shaikh was unemployed, Gaikwad used to occasionally drive an auto-rickshaw. According to police, the duo was sleeping under the flyover when someone smashed their heads and faces with a stone.

“We came to know about the incident around 7.30 am on Wednesday, after passersby spotted the bodies and informed us. The locals helped us identify the duo. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. A case has been registered under section 302 (punishment for murder) of IPC. Further investigation into the matter is on,” said Suraj Padvi, senior police inspector, Sanpada police station. Sources said that the CCTV cameras at the spot were not working at the time of the incident, as they had been disconnected for repair work.

Speaking to mid-day, S Pathare, deputy commissioner of police, Navi Mumbai, said, “The detained person has confessed to the crime, but he is being interrogated further. It is suspected that the deceased were harassing the accused since a long time, and hence, the latter killed them.”
