Mumbai Rains: Intense spells to hit suburban areas

Few spells of moderate rain and shower at some parts would occur over Santacruz, Borivali, Kandivli, Mira Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and Ulhas Nagar during next 2-3hrs

The India Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent rains with heavy to very heavy showers are likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai and its suburbs. The total rainfall for Mumbai this season is recorded at 1452.4 mm at Colaba station and 1875.9 mm at Santacruz station since June. The city has been experiencing showers of varied intensity since the past five days. The city saw heavy to very heavy rainfall in the past five days. The city also witnessed severe waterlogging in these days.





According to the private weather forecast, Skymet, Mumbai Rains are on the verge of breaking its all-time rainfall record in the month of July. Till now the highest rainfall record for July is 1468.5 mm (2014). Till today 2:30 pm, Mumbai has recorded over 1425 mm of rainfall in July.

Director of IMD Mumbai, K S Hosalikar tweeted, 'Doppler Assesment: Intense rainfall very likely in Panvel and Dapoli areas of Navi Mumbai and Alibag in next 1,2 hours. Around 17-20 mm / hour.'

The Mumbai rains also took a tragic turn as a father and his minor son lost their lives after a wall of their house collapsed following the landslide in Kalwa on Tuesday midnight caused by the heavy rains. The deceased have been identified as Birendra Jaswal (40) and his son Sunny (10) who were staying at the slum near the hills in Kalwa.

According to the officials, the deceased's house was caught in the landslide, resulting in the wall collapse which killed them. The DMRC team along with the police, fire brigade and the civic officials undertook the reached the spot to rescue those stuck under the debris. After being pulled out along with 10 others, the father and his son duo were immediately shifted to Chatrapathi Shivaji Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival by the doctors. Jaswal’s wife Neelam (35) was also injured in the mishap but is stable.

Speaking to PTI, an official from the Water Resources department saif, "The release of water will help arid regions of South-Central Maharashtra and parts of Marathwada."
