This year the onset of rainfall was predicted at June 10 by the India Meterological Department. The arrival date of regular rain showers was later postponed to June 19.

After a dry spell of over 10 days, the IMD predicted heavy to moderate rain showers from Thursday (July 13) to Sunday (July 16) due to the presence of a stationary low pressure area, will probably lead to heavy rain for Gujarat and Konkan coasts. IMD officials have discovered that a lot of moisture will be pulled from the sea along the Gujarat and north Konkan coastline, leading to extreme rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

The IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories have recorded 603.5 mm and 717.1 mm respectively since June 1, which is almost 289.5 mm below average in the case of IMD Colaba and 159.1 mm below normal as far as IMD Santacruz is concerned.
