Notorious criminal Azam Aslam Butt, who had jumped parole for the third time and failed to report at the Nagpur Central Jail on January 25, has finally been traced by the Naya Nagar police. The murder convict, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 21, 2014, had secured 30-day parole on October 26, 2017, with an extension of 60 days. His parole expired on January 24, 2018. When he didn't show up the next day, a case was registered against him. This was his third 90-day break as well as escape. He had been granted parole in 2014 and 2016 earlier, while lodged in Nashik Central Jail, and both times he'd jumped.
Holed up in Vakola
Soon after mid-day reported about his escape on February 5, the Naya Nagar police succeeded in locating his hideout — Butt was found admitted in Dattatreya Nursing Home, Vakola, undergoing treatment for urosepsis (a complication of urinary tract infection).
Butt's counsel had communicated to Bombay High Court's Nagpur bench that Butt had been suffering from urology complications and needed immediate medical attention, requesting HC's permission for a few more days of leave. The court, however, had dismissed the writ petition and said he could be treated at the Super Speciality Hospital in Nagpur under the jail authorities' supervision.
Dr Sandeep Kumar at Dattatreya Nursing Home confirmed Butt's admission at the clinic for urosepsis treatment and added that Butt would be discharged soon. Senior Inspector Balaji Pandhre told mid-day, "Once he is discharged, we will make the arrest and produce him before the Thane court."
Liar, liar?
Vishwanath Gharat, victim Kashinath Gharat's brother, however, has alleged that there's nothing wrong with Butt. "He's pulled the same trick earlier as well. He gets sick only after completion of his parole period. The gimmick has been brought to the notice of the Vakola police in the past in writing, as this clinic falls under their jurisdiction. The hospital in-charge should be questioned, as the local police station was never informed about Butt's health complications," said Vishwanath.
90 No. of days Butt was released on parole
