Mumbai: The 11.04 Km Versova Andheri Ghatkopar(VAG) metro corridor that was thrown open earlier this month created a global record by carrying over 7.5 million commuters in less than a month of its operation.

Commencing its commercial operation on 8th June, the Mumbai Metro has crossed the 7.5 million mark of its total ridership within 23 days on 30th June, 2014.

“Carrying over 7.5 million commuters in less than a month is indeed an exemplary achievement by itself. Mumbai Metro has become a part and parcel of Mumbaikars’ lives in last three weeks. It has completely changed the dynamics of commuting in Mumbai. Commuting on the 11.4 km highly congested corridor – connecting Ghatkopar in East Mumbai with Versova in West – was a nightmare even a few weeks ago. Now, it has perhaps become the most commuter-friendly corridor in comparison with other congested stretches in Mumbai,” said an MMOPL spokesperson.

Immediately after the launch of commercial operation, Mumbai Metro had registered over 2.4 lakh daily ridership, which, within a few days, had increased to 2.5 lakh and further to 5 lakh registering 100% increase in passenger traffic in less than a month.

Starting its commercial operation on 8th June (Sunday), Mumbai Metro, registered ridership of 2.40 lakh commuters within 11 hours of operation. On the second day, it registered a footfall of 2.92 lakh commuters in 18.30 hours (full day operation between 5.30am and 12 midnight) and 2.97 lakh commuters in 18.30 hours the next day. Mumbai Metro ridership crossed 4.5 lakh on Saturday and Sunday the ridership crossed 5 lakh mark.

Keeping in view the growing demand for metro rides, the MMOPL has organized free weekend joyrides for children and issued special return joyride tickets for the general commuters over the past three eventful weeks. Approximately, 4 lakh 50 thousand children have enjoyed the free joyrides in weekends.
