Mumbai Metro commuters pleased with marginal fare hike

The increased fare of Rs 20 from Tuesday did not seem to have any affect on commuters using the 11.04-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro.

MMOPL claimed that the decision for not hiking maximum fare to Rs 40 was taken after the overwhelming response from Mumbaikars. The temporary fare hike is still lower than the maximum ticket price charged by BEST buses of Rs 25, for the same distance. File pic

After the promotional run of flat Rs 10 for a month, the now regular passengers on the new metro were not troubled about the new ticket price of Rs 10-15-20. Smart card users travelling end to end will have to pay only Rs 15, which is expected to increase its sale.

After the one-month run of the new metro, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) announced the new ticket fares, effective from July 8. MMOPL claimed that the decision for not hiking maximum fare to Rs 40 was taken after the overwhelming response from Mumbaikars.

The temporary fare hike is still lower than the maximum ticket price charged by BEST buses of Rs 25, for the same distance. There was no drop in the number of passengers using the metro on Tuesday. Commuters seemed ready to shell out more, as they feel that the new public transport not only helps them save time, but also provides a safe and hassle-free journey.
