A team from electronics giant Philips and senior doctors visited Nair hospital's radiology department yesterday to inspect the culprit MRI machine. Work to remove the oxygen cylinder and deceased Rajesh Maru's severed finger will start on Wednesday. Also, an internal committee has been formed to make more stringent rules at radiology wards to prevent such incidents in the future.

On Tuesday, a meeting was held between experts from Philips, the manufacturer of the machine, and four heads of radiology departments of Nair, Cooper, Sion and KEM hospitals. "We need to remove the cylinder before restarting the machine. Philips officials came to inspect it. They have already kept their equipment inside, and work will start tomorrow. They need to remove the helium to disable the machine's magnetic field," said a senior doctor from Nair hospital.
After this, a team of engineers from Nair hospital will examine the machine to check its efficiency. It will be restarted once they submit a report and give a green light. Dean Dr Ramesh Bhansal said, "We can't say when the machine will restart… we need the okay from the engineering department first." Besides the HODs getting together to come up with stricter rules to avert future tragedies, the civic body too has set up a committee to probe the incident.
