The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

We love to prefix claims with the label ‘For the first time ever!’ so that this phrase is sometimes met with skepticism. Yet, it is true, this is the first time ever, that women will compete in the Sixth World Body Building and Physique Sports Competition 2014 to be held in Mumbai in early December this year.

The Maharashtra Selection Trials were held over the weekend in Dadar, where all categories of bodybuilders from the State participated. Those selected have one more test, the National Selection trials at Vadodara in November, after which it is the Worlds in December.
Meanwhile, one saw the women fighting hard for a place on the team. All those ladies flooding city gyms and pushing iron may find some inspiration here.
Cane and able
While election fever peaked in the city yesterday as the State poll results were declared, the visually challenged community in Mumbai organised a clean up. Lead by disability and gender rights activist Nidhi Goyal, 16 visually challenged individuals and 25 sighted volunteers (including two blindfolded cleaners) cleaned the Lokhandwala area in Andheri (W).
Marking the day with a difference
World White Cane Day, which was observed on October 15 was celebrated with vision by Nidhi. Shivkumar Raheja, a transcriptionist and access technology trainer who helps the blind communicate, was joined by participants from Panvel, Thane and Dahisar. Students from Tolani College in Mahakali, Andheri (E) were also present.
“We wanted to take PM Modi’s Swachcha Bharat message to our community. It is easy to litter, but difficult to clean up,” says Nidhi. The effort was supported by Dr Neha Goyal, dermatologist and funded by Ashish Goyal, a blind trader residing in London.
