Mumbai Diary: Wednesday Whispers

Light it up blue
While we go about our daily work and leisure, we may not stop to think about those differently abled than us. True, there are plenty of us who spare time, money and effort to help those who need it, but as a people we still need to go a long way towards being more aware and egalitarian in thought and deed.

World Autism Awareness Day, tomorrow (April 2), is one day when we can gain more knowledge as well as generate more awareness about autism, dealing with it and living with it.

Oberoi Mall in Goregaon East has organised, in collaboration with New Horizons Health and Research Foundation and IAP Childhood Disability Group, a programme from noon to 1.30pm on raising awareness about how children with autism can be assimilated into society. The message will be conveyed through performing art, mime performances and short films, among other things.

Taking it further, from 11am to 7pm on April 5 (Sunday), children will display products showcasing their talent and skill, and there will be short films and interactive sessions, in collaboration with SOPAN (Society of Parents of children with Autistic Disorders). To symbolise autism awareness, you can join the worldwide movement to “Light it up Blue” (forumforautism.org).

Mango Lingo
And for April Fool’s Day, it is time to be, what else but a trifle foolish. So one though the time is right to marry some inanity and aams and come up with this lights hearted salute to the fruit. All in the name of foolishness, of course.

>> A weaponless mango in a fight, is un-aam-ed combat.
>> A mango who is into theatre and a George Bernard Shaw fan writes Aams and the Man.
>> One mango shouts combatively, watch out, I am aam-ed and dangerous
>> One mango in a peti is a one man aam-y
>> A mother tells a baby mango, it is time to cut the aam-blical cord
>> A differently abled mango has only one aam
>> A box of mangoes who want to contest the Indian election go by the name of Aam Aadmi Peti (AAP)
>> A box of mangoes has a favourite getaway, Aam-by Valley
>> A mango peti who wants to get inked, has a tattoo on his aam
>> If you do not want to get hurt, best to stay out of aam’s way
>> If you see a mango trail at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, (BKC) do not be surprised. They are simply waiting for an Aam-erican visa
>> One mango tells another, let there be no aam-biguity
>> A mango who looks for a break in Bollywood says: if Aam-ir Khan, why can’t I?
>> A mango slicks back its stem, looks at itself in the mirror and says; I think I should make it as brand Aam-bassador
>> Another says, the Aam-bassador is obsolete, not me — I am always in demand
>> A forgetful mango suffers from aam-nesia
>> One mango tells another: hum aam-ke hai kaun?
>> Ordinary mangoes are part of the aam janata
>> A mango with a gun runs out of aam-unition
>> There should be absolutely no aam-bivalence, about this real estate re-development deal, thinks one mango
>> A mango at a cricket match could be the third aam-pire
>> A mango yawns as he looks at the clock going off and says, damn this al-aam, I am not just a morning person.
>> A sex manual for mangoes is called the aam-a sutra
>> One mango box tells another, we can’t buy things in that boutique called Mango, clothes there cost an aam and a leg
>> Reading this, one wonders if you are saying, yeh dil mango nooooo more...

Swirl to the Whirl
If you thought that fashion photography only meant showcasing clothes-horses - oops, models and knowing which famous face belongs to which celebrated house, well, here’s testament to the fact that Fashion is also Art. And that photographing it is as much a skill as designing those beautiful outfits.

So it was fitting, as it were, that Satyajit Desai, mid-day’s senior photographer, bagged the second prize at Lakme Fashion Week’s photography contest as part of their 15th anniversary commemoration. Desai, who has been covering the event for several years, captured this fleeting moment on the ramp during the event’s winter/festive edition in August 2011.
