The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce
Don't show me the finger!
Of the many events that were organised across the city for Women’s Day, one managed to achieve a Guinness World Records title for ‘Most people painting their fingernails simultaneously’.

All for Ganesha

A cut above the rest
Jaslok Hospital at Peddar Road turned into a selfie-zone yesterday for a Women’s Day initiative with a difference and a conscience. A gaggle of girls stood in line, their tresses chopped off, taking ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures to share on social media.

Each of them proudly flashed their certificates of appreciation that were presented for donating their hair to the NGO, Coping with Cancer. This hair will be used to make wigs for cancer survivors. As many as 60 girls trooped in from nearby colleges for the drive, some nervous, others excited.
It takes at least 12 inches of hair to make wigs. The celebrity stylist cutting hair was Sapna Bhavnani, who also announced free hair cuts at her Bandra salon, for those who donated their hair at Jaslok yesterday. The star of the event though, was Aurin Navne (45) who sheared her hip-long hair for the donation drive and went completely bald!
Running her hands over her freshly exposed scalp, an excited Navne said, “I always wanted to shave my head, having grown up with five brothers who used to go bald. I was always discouraged by my family and was told, girls don’t shave heads. Now that it is for a good cause, no one could stop me.”
Navne is looking forward to walking into office bald and seeing her colleagues’ stunned faces. Meanwhile, we were pleasantly surprised to see so many people at the hospital ready to donate their hair for the initiative. Occasionally, this ruthlessly competitive, always-in-a-hurry city has a heart and this time, we saw it shine through.
A whole lot of vegan cooking
It’s tough enough to be a mum in chaotic, time-starved Mumbai. Now, imagine being a vegan mum! Our fave go-to vegan baker and homechef, Rithika Ramesh is cooking up something in her kitchen again. Recently, the Ghatkopar-based mum launched That Vegan Mum, a blog that will come to the rescue of vegan mums.
Rithika Ramesh
Packed with recipes, culinary tips and tricks, we loved the cutesy inputs that she’s been sharing about creating stuff for she and her little one. This should spell good news for mums keen to follow the mantra of ‘everything in between being a mother and being a human’.
They got their GK right!
Funding a vibrant pace bowling scheme is one thing. Honouring and rewarding a former journalist who was instrumental in the emergence of late India pacer Ramakant Desai is another. Both acts are noble. Today, at the Cricket Club of India, a leading life insurance company will honour 88-year-old, GK Menon for his services to cricket.

Menon also dabbled in cricket administration and was manager of the 1952-53 champion Bombay University team led by wicketkeeper-batsman Mehli Irani, who was good enough to play more than just the one Ranji Trophy game for Mumbai.
That Bombay University team had five future Test players — Nari Contractor, Chandu Patankar, Naren Tamhane, Ramnath Kenny and GR Sunderam. Never known to take a backward step, Menon, then reporting for a national newspaper, ran on to the field to inform the umpires that the scorers could not see their signals due to the smoke caused by a riot during the 1969-70 India vs Australia Test at Brabourne Stadium.
Australian captain Bill Lawry thought Menon was an intruder and shooed him away with an expletive. Menon responded by calling the long-nosed Lawry a popat (parrot).
