The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Royalty to make way for South American lounge
First as Poison and then, as the snazzy, chandelier-lit nightclub Royalty (extreme left), the space in Krystal Building on Waterfield Road served as a hip haunt for the city’s party animals, for over five years until Royalty quietly bid adieu last month.

Now, something new is set to open in its place. Restaurateurs Mihir Desai and Amit Singh (left, in pic) of Corum Hospitality — the boys behind the runaway hit chain, The Bar Stock Exchange — are expected to enter into a joint venture with the owners of Club Royalty to start a new South American restaurant-cum-lounge.

The team is also planning to bring down an international chef, well versed with the cuisine, to helm the kitchen. While the timelines are not clear at the moment, we’re excited about Rumba and Samba beats replacing Bollywood music.

Thanks, but no thanks, Baba!
Dandia queen Falguni Pathak didn’t seem forthcoming to Baba Ramdev’s gesture for a handshake, and instead chose to take the namaste route backstage at a TV serial shoot in Filmistan yesterday.

Club crossovers, all
Cross pollination is the name of the game, and Mumbai club members, practice the same. There was a swathe of Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) representatives seen at the recent Cricket Club of India (CCI) Annual General Meet (AGM). Given the high interest the run-up had evoked, with reports about president Kekoo Nicholson hitting newspapers and intense interest about who will win seats to the Executive Committee (EC), one expected the AGM to record a good turnout.

Most seats in the house were full. RWITC chairman, Vivek Jain took the mike and spoke at the CCI about how mud-slinging should be avoided, and that thus was not the time to dwell on issues that are not germane to the club’s functioning. Jain may have been hinting at the Kekoo controversy but he didn’t bring it up at all. Kekoo had substantial support from RWITC members. We saw the apex turf club’s Champaklal Zaveri getting into his car after casting his vote.

He waved away this diarist as if not wanting to get into any controversy, as some shouting erupted within the AGM. “Bau dhamaal chhe” he said in Gujarati, (there is a lot of shouting, some aggro), before getting into his car. Former RWITC bigwig Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, who entered a tad late. was seen looking for a spot to sit. “Let’s go up, we can watch proceedings from there on the television screens,” he stated, indicating the verandah. We think the current Prez had considerable horsepower support behind him.

All about the Boss
He’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has won 20 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. The Boss, better known as Bruce Springsteen is ready with his memoirs that will hit bookshelves, as every fan waits to pore over this legendary rock star’s life.

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was exhilarating and Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this autobiography began. Over seven years back, he began to pen it, with honesty, humour and originality, just like his music. Fans will relish that a compilation album, Chapter and Verse, will serve as an audio companion to the title. The Boss rocks!

A for Amitav Ghosh
In a reader-happy move, a leading publishing house has announced a poll to vote for the best rejacketed avatar of its writer, Amitav Ghosh’s bestseller, The Hungry Tide. Check out options A and B, and wait until the winner is picked. Oh, and our vote went to A. What about you?

Not without my mother
You read it here first. Friends, confidantes and fighter cocks is how fashion designer Masaba describes herself and her actress mother Neena Gupta, in a video that launches today as part of Unblushed series on Culture Machine’s digital channel, Blush. It celebrates beauty by highlighting that behind every successful woman, there’s her squad, be it mother, sister, friends or colleagues.

With warmth evident in the frames, Neena dons multiple avatars to help Masaba get ready for a shoot — from helping her apply make-up to getting her dress’s fit right and getting her comfy in front of a camera. “She is the only mother I have come across who will tell me that you are so bad at something, which is a crazy level of honesty,” says Masaba in a VO as we can’t help but fall in love with the mother-daughter duo in the video.fashion weeks in the city.
