The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Getting heady in Shivaji Park
On a late Sunday morning a crowd had gathered around a few guys at this diarist’s favourite hunting ground, Shivaji Park.

Where’s your helmet, dude?
Where’s your helmet, dude?

The spring in their step is because they were practicing powerbocking — a new sport where athletes jump on what seem like stilts. The boys were at it, as Shivaji Park regulars looked on amused and enthralled. One onlooker expressed concern that the crew hadn't worn any protective gear like helmets or elbow guards.

Well, that may be something to think about, but on that humid Sunday morning when passing clouds teased with the promise of rain, these boys looked set to jump right to the sky.

No acting for me, please

The frame with cricket legend Kapil Dev and actor Nana Patekar at a film-centric event in Lower Parel tempted us to guess if the iconic actor was trying his best to rope in the all-rounder for a role in an upcoming film project. Shailendra Singh (centre) is also in the frame.

Oh Baba!
The Bollywood brigade led by Abhishek Bachchan took on the Babul Supriyo-led Members of Parliament in an exhibition game in New Delhi to support the girl child.

The gala affair was kicked off by Baba Ramdev. As if his leggy show on the cover of a news magazine wasn’t enough, social media was agog with frames of the saffron robe hiked up for a ‘hair-raising’ show. We’ll let the photo do all the talking. Pic/PTI

Lutchuke, laughter and love
Last weekend, the wheelchair-accessible venue at Daughters Of St Paul in Bandra was packed with a crowd of 270, headed to a stand-up gig, Sex And Sexability. It aimed to bust myths and stereotypes attached to sexuality and disability, featuring five comics: Neenu Kewlani, Rohan Sabharwal, Nidhi Goyal, Gavin ‘Chubby’ Methalaka and Robyn Lambird.

While Lambird, a 19-year-old Perth-based spoken word artist with Cerebral Palsy, regaled all (via a pre-recorded video) with jokes on ‘how doing it with a disabled person can be so creative’, Goyal, a visually impaired activist, stood out for her witty anecdotes about how aunties end up speech impaired when they learn that she is visually impaired.

Improv pro Methalaka had the audience in splits with a no-holds-barred set, urging everyone to treat the differently-abled like any other. Host Aditi Mittal took the garb of her alter ego, Dr Mrs Savitri Lutchuke (sexologist, psychologist and fekologist) and educated ‘ishtudents’ on male and female reproductive organs. Such fun.

Let’s Play!
After bars in the city added board games to their menu, drinking games were not to be left too far behind.

Launched over the weekend in Lower Parel, gaming bar, Play -The Lounge features drinking games like Kings, Alco Hockey, Beer Pong, Drunken Tower, Battle Shots, Shot Chess, Ludo with shot glasses, Shots and Ladder, Poker, Black Jack, Never Have I Ever, and Spin The Bottle along with four interactive touch screen tables and a five-seater kings' table.

Founded by entrepreneurs Kaushik Mehta, Samir Gandhi and Divyesh Thakkar, the space boasts of a Scotch Club designed for Scotch lovers that comes with a set of perks for members after they are one drink down. We’d like to see how this one plays out.

The cool FLOTUS
Admission time. The First Lady of the United States ranks high on our favourite celeb list. Michelle Obama knows how to rock it, and look at ease.

The latest is a video where she advocates the need to carpool. Mrs Obama is seen grooving in a car with rapper Missy Elliot and James Cordon, and looking every bit the music star, and a stylish one, may we add.
