The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Pow-wow-ouch!
When a Union Minister spars with a popular Congress spokesperson on Twitter, it is news. Thus we couldn’t take our eyes off this social media thread once we spotted it early on Monday morning. It all started with an innocuous bait from Right-wing columnist Shefali Vaidya:

Smriti Irani, Shefali Vaidya and Priyanka Chaturvedi

@ShefVaidya When @priyankac19 is trolled, it is an attack on ‘dignity of women’ but poisonous slander against @smritiirani is acceptable.
Chaturvedi, the pugnacious Congress spokesperson, couldn’t resist:

@priyankac19 Ms @ShefVaidya a perceived threat to @smritiirani’s life gets Z sec,here I am struggling to get rape/death threat investigated.cut the crap

Fair point. But then, here is also where the gloves came off. We offer the reminder of this exchange without comment:

@smritiirani @priyankac19 I don’t have Z security Madam.

@priyankac19 Madam I don't know the internal workings of Home Ministry, i go as per newspaper reports. I presume no security at all then @smritiirani?

@smritiirani @priyankac19 why are you so interested in my security? Planning anything?

@priyankac19 Not worth my time, so don’t worry on that front @smritiirani , you must concentrate on creating another campus ruckus.

@smritiirani @priyankac19 dats more Rahulji’s forte. Oh wait, losing Assam is. My bad. Have a good day.

@priyankac19 Repeatedly losing and yet becoming a minister in the cabinet is your forte. You have a glorious day too @smritiirani

Who won, do you ask? We leave it to you to decide.

Meet Mira Nair’s legend
When acclaimed director Mira Nair calls someone ‘a legend’, we take note.

Recently, Nair posted on Twitter, ‘My legend Vishal Bhardwaj (in pic) — composer of Monsoon Wedding for Broadway — amidst the legends of the Apollo theater!’ Do we hear of a movie in the pipeline? And the subject would be...? Mumbai, monsoon or Shakespeare? We’re just saying.

Kolte and the canvas
As part of their initiative to introduce art to the common man across media, recently opened art space, Art Hub in Worli, hosted an interactive chat with eminent abstract artist Prabhakar Kolte over the weekend.

The artist shared anecdotes from his journey as an artist, and his transformation from a newbie to one of Mumbai’s most respected names in the art fraternity.

What’s next on the menu?
We loved this photo posted by chef Anthony Bourdain during an informal chat with US President Barack Obama at a no-frills Hanoi eatery.

‘Low plastic stool, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer.’ Protocol, what’s that!

The writing is on the wall
The wall around the corner of Keiki Mehta’s Clinic opposite Saurabh Hotel near the Bombay Port Trust Garden Lane in Colaba has a new look. Over the weekend, a group of 40 volunteers from New Acropolis, Colaba Advanced Local Management and My Dream Colaba including children, youngsters and even seniors worked to paint the message of ‘Truth’.

Previously, two other walls in the area were painted with ‘Hope and Harmony’. “As part of our mission beautification of Colaba, this will probably be the last wall we paint before the rains. By painting white lotuses on Buddha Purnima, we felt truth in all things was a good message for all. A local fruit seller was so impressed, he gave volunteers free bananas as snacks,” said Harshita Narwekar from My Dream Colaba.

This is an ongoing project, and the NGO is hoping to get back to painting soon after the monsoon has done its round.
