Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Not without my daughter
This Sunday, New Delhi’s glitterati will raise a toast to the girl child at a do to mark the release of Timeless Portraits of Love, a coffee table book by Khushii, an organisation that works towards the development of the girl child and the Beti Bachao campaign. Headquartered in Delhi, Khushii is headed by cricket legend Kapil Dev.

Members of Mumbai’s swish set of fathers and daughters, including Mahesh and Alia Bhatt, Suniel and Athiya Shetty and Javed and Zoya Akhtar have graced the pages of this title. It features photographs by Dabboo Ratnani, Jatin Kampani, Suresh Natrajan, Amit Pasricha, Rohan Shreshta, Nikhil Rai, Saify Naqvi, Sudhir Ramachandran and Rafique Sayed.

The all-rounder is thrilled at this result of the initiative, “Each page carries story of a father’s love for his daughter, each photograph captures the quiet gleam of an abiding relationship, in turn inspire other fathers of daughters who might till date imagine they have been burdened by fate. This book is sure to bring joy to daughters far beyond those who grace its pages.” We were bowled by this gentle outswinger.

Mumbai waters for Latur
A group of young Mumbaikars — Nikhil Miranda, Ruth D’Costa, Viral Patel, Aafreen Ali and Richika Padubidri, members of volunteer group Karnewale, have started a crowdfunding page to help drought-affected Latur.
The professionals, who work with various NGOs, have a page on Ketto and have partnering with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Organisation, a Latur-based NGO.

Aafreen Ali says, “We have worked for women’s safety, road safety, the LGBT community as well as other projects with on-ground initiatives. We need to raise R1 lakh to help Latur’s residents. So far, we have collected approximately Rs 33,000. We approach people outside railway stations, malls and other public spaces to raise awareness about the plight of Latur.”

The group began this campaign last week with 25 online and offline volunteers. Rameshwar Chounda, chairman of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Organisation, shares, “We work in small villages around Latur that are badly affected. A water container costs Rs 30. We will provide these as soon as the money comes in.” The NGO and volunteer group plan to transport water from either Mumbai or Pune to the drought affected areas.

The return of Rabbi
Yesterday, this music-loving diarist received news that brought cheer. The man behind hits like Bulla Ki Jaana and Tere Bin, Rabbi Shergill is back, and set to perform in Mumbai.

The audience will be treated to his signature Sufi rock ballads along with performances by Sonu Kakkar, Shibani Kashyap, Groove Yatra and other young talent at an awards ceremony.

When we dug a bit deeper, we learnt that a Baisakhi special music video was released on Rabbi’s YouTube channel last Wednesday. It was his first upload of the year. Is there a new album in the offing? Or will there be a major tour? Either way, we are hoping there’s more in store for us from the Sufi balladeer.

Samosa support
If you’re yet to try The Bohri Kitchen’s delish mutton samosas, we suggest you head to the nearest Social outpost.

As part of the Social Supports programme, all Social outlets have stocked up on TBK’s signature Oh-My-Gosht! (smoked mutton samosa, in pic) and Dal Shaal Teh Samosa Bemisaal (smoked dal samosa) till mid-May.

The programme aims to offer a platform for local start-ups and individuals to showcase their talent. Here’s hoping more home chefs find their way to eateries. We’ll crunch to that.

Another feather in the Peacock duo’s cap
Designers Falguni and Shane Peacock, with their elaborate glam creations have found a fan base among many international artistes that include Jennifer Lopez and Fergie.
