Doordarshan, on a roll
As one read the press release, it brought a smile to the face of this diarist when she spotted the name, ‘Doordarshan’. It was flashback time to memories of Saptahiki, Hum Log, Buniyaad, Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Of course, who can forget some truly memorable Sunday afternoon cinema viewing too. So, we were thrilled to learn that Doordarshan has tied up with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya to present a three-day ‘Best of Indian Cinema Film Festival’ that commences on August 21.

The festival will include screenings like Shagird (Tigmanshu Dhulia), Harud (Aamir Bashir), Ninizhalkkuthu (Adoor Gopalakrishnan) and The Last Lear (Rituparno Ghosh). Shows begin at 12 noon on all three days and will be screened at CSMVS.

Biddu is back
Remember Made In India? No, not Milind Soman’s chiselled physique that wowed all in the Alisha Chinai video by the same name but the man behind the same album that went on to become a runaway success in the 1990s Biddu, the name by which we all know him or formally Biddu Appaiah.

A few years ago this music producer, composer, songwriter and singer turned writer when he signed book deal with Harper Collins for fiction and non-fiction books. His autobiography, titled Made in India, has now been relaunched with additions. The book was originally launched in 2010 and traces his journey from India to the United Kingdom and his struggles as a musician.

Old? Not me!
Age is just a number says an Active Ageing Venture & Conference on ageing to be held at the Bharat Scouts & Guides Hall at Shivaji Park, Dadar, (opposite the Mayor’s Bungalow) on August 21-22.

The rather upbeat name for the conference is ‘Celebrating Age 2015’. The two-day exhibition and interactive sessions include yoga, lifestyle, wellness and free general health screening. This is an initiative of Vision India. Organisers say that there is an emphasis on senior product categories which include fitness services and products.

With life expectancy on the rise, seniors are getting more opportunities to reinvent themselves, both mentally and physically. Here’s to more lung power to blowing out all those candles on the cake! The free event will carry on from 10 am to 6 pm (on both days). Interested folk can call 09823055525/09325041602 or log on to www.visiontekindia.com

Cow’s that!
So we were watching kids whip up delectable dishes on MasterChef Junior (US) when something strange caught our eye. The channel beeped out the word after ‘Drunken’ from the name of a 12-year-old boy’s dream restaurant that he would like to open one day.

The word ‘cow’ was stamped out of the English subtitles

Not just that, it blurred out the word in the little boy’s pencil sketch as well. Intrigued, we decided to find out the word that was deemed unsuitable for public viewing. A quick Google search revealed that the word in question was ‘Cow’.

As 12-year-old Sean explained, he liked cooking with different meats and wines, hence the name ‘Drunken Cow’. However, this explanation was clearly not good enough for the keepers of our morality. Seems the censors have taken the beef ban in the state to heart!
