The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Thursday Dossier

After Rhythm House
When mid-day broke the news last November about SoBo’s most loved music store, Rhythm House, shutting shop, we wondered what would become of theatre lovers who called the store to book the best seats in the house for some of the largest classical music and drama productions.

Nita Daru, 65, a gentle lady who sat for over three decades in a corner of the store, was your go-to person if you were looking to reserve seats. For theatrewallahs, Daru would help bag licences and permissions required to stage a production.

A day after the store shuttered, we learnt that Daru is now housed at Tejpal Auditorium near August Kranti Maidan, from 9 am to 12 noon, and back from 4 pm to 7 pm. “This is a temporary arrangement,” she told this diarist. She’d rather find a spot back at Kala Ghoda or Fort, centrally located and home to the music and theatre-loving communities.

Daru, once a young door-to-door salesgirl, took on the job at Rhythm House when her brother, who performed the role before her, took ill. The music store owned by the Curmallys has been second home to Daru since 1982. “I need to sustain myself and the family,” says Daru, who is the only earning member and has a differently-abled sister to care for.

“Rhythm House was my soul and heart; I miss sitting there. I feel my home has been taken away, but life must goes on.” We doubt there will come a better opportunity for some of the city’s influential culturati to step in and play Santa.

In the spirit of clothes
Yes, we agree that one of India’s most celebrated and sold fashion designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee makes garments that could send you into a trance, but we are surprised — just like he is — about why he’d be invited to a spiritual convention helmed by prominent spiritual and yoga guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

That both Sadhguru and Sabya are articulate speakers means the gathering might just be treated to an engaging exchange, but the designer was nevertheless puzzled to receive an invitation to participate in a Mahashivratri celebration this weekend at the Ishayoga ashram in the foothills of Velliangiri, Coimbatore.

But gracious that he is, he has decided to make the journey. Besides, a little bit of publicity never harmed anyone, especially when you have a grand new store opening in the capital.

These marathoners will run through six Indian states winding up at the Gateway of India on July 20, thereby creating India’s first-ever multi-city ultra marathon, The Great India Run.

The cross-country run will witness 12 Indian and international runners who will be encouraged to set a new record for the fastest time, covering a distance of 1,480km.

Watch out for Sachin Tendulkar
For Tendulkar fans who have been itching to get their hands on a souvenir or collectible belonging to the god of cricket, this bit of news might bring cheer.

Christie’s will be celebrating its 10th auction anniversary in Dubai on March 15. The sale will offer a limited edition Audermars Piguet Royal Oak offshore, Sachin Tendulkar model, number 132 out of a 300 limited edition, to celebrate his outstanding contribution to sport.

The watch was made in 2013 and will be available for an estimated $12,000-18,000. You might have to break a couple of banks for this indulgence!

How Modi won, and other stories
Political strategist Prashant Kishor who played a pivotal role in the emphatic, historic victories of Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar is ready to write about his experiences.

The intuitive and articulate Kishor will be working closely with senior journalist Sankarshan Thakur as his co-author on a hugely-anticipated title that will look to unravel the unpredictable landscape of Indian elections, and how to win and lose.

One of the marquee titles from the Chiki Sarkar-founded Juggernaut stable, the book discusses the influencers of the Indian voter, his aspirations and their expectations from today’s political leaders. With Thakur, who has tracked the political journeys of Bihar’s leaders like Nitish saab and Laloo ji, being co-writer, we’re sure that this title will pack in all we need to know about the Great Indian Circus... sorry! Election.
