Fair play
Recently, UNICEF India unveiled the Fair Start film as part of a (social) media campaign that will focus on inequality faced by large groups of children in India, thus affecting their survival, growth and development. A series of impactful films will offer an insight into the lives of millions of such kids across backgrounds, who display talent and potential but are less likely to grow up healthy and safe, to attend school, to learn, and more likely to be married off young. The campaign draws attention to the lives of many such kids deprived of their rights, often spurred by their circumstance. The series was produced with the participation of a group of children who brought their daily reality to the film set. The crew included cameraman Sahil, a 14-year-old music and sports enthusiast. His father passed away three years back, and he currently assists his uncle at a laundry. Art director Suraj is a 10-year-old whose father is an alcoholic while 15-year-old cameraman Shawn has six siblings. Since his father left home and mother keeps unwell, he took the responsibility to run his family by cleaning gutters, among other degrading tasks. Salaam to these real-life heroes.

Amma on my mind
Elusive filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, currently busy with the filiming of his mega TV series, Will on William Shakespeare’s youth in London, air-dashed to the city to release his docu-feature, The Science of Compassion dedicated to spiritual leader ‘Amma’ Amritanandamayi Devi. “It was enlightenment and self-realisation for me as well, even as I directed the docu-feature and interviewed her in her ashram. One should not expect instant dramatic miracles to happen when Amma hugs thousands of devotees. Miracles are happening around us every moment. Our next breath and the planets moving in orbit with perfect precision are miracles,” shrugged the charismatic Kapur who, refused to accept any fees for his docu-deviation.

He came, he saw...
The white and red blooms at the entrance of Sahara Star hotel, near the domestic airport at Santacruz, were an indication that this was a floral welcome for a special guest. That guest was Saharasri and owner of the Sahara empire, Subrata Roy (inset), who is presently out on parole for his mother’s last rites. Hotel staffers were tight-lipped, not admitting even to his presence in the hotel. One of them claimed that the flowers adorning the doors, were for an event. Yet, we learnt that Roy was at the hotel, and had arrived yesterday. It was the first time that he took stock of the mammoth property since his time in jail. A 2014 Supreme Court verdict had said that Sahara must refund R36,000 crore to investors who deposited money in two financial schemes started by the firm. Another shared that Roy toured the hotel, with senior staff, soaking in its opulence outside the lobby. “He must be resting inside,” conjectured a staff member. A security person at the door said, “There was excitement when he arrived; most of the staff saw the owner for the first time. Saharasri ji must have eaten lunch at one of the hotel’s restaurants.” The most memorable item on the menu must have been the sweet aroma of freedom, albeit temporarily.

A little birdie tells Daily Dossier that come next year there could well be one on India’s 1983 cricket World Cup triumph. We hear that some members of that team have been sounded out and are willing to give the film their blessings and time.

Next year will mark 34 years for that Lord’s win and the people behind the film not only want to project the brilliant manner in which Kapil’s Devils stunned the cricketing world, but also how June 25, 1983 changed India and caused a change in mindset in our budding cricketers. This is going to be worth the wait even if means it will be released to commemorate anniversary No 35.

In the Juhu mix
We love gummy bears, oysters and malai kulfi. So, finding them on the menu of Myx, which opens to patrons on Monday, has brought much glee. To be launched by Redbrik Restaurant (they run Fable and True Tramm Trunk) in Juhu, the tapas-style bar plays up molecular gastronomy techniques, featuring deconstructed recipes from over eight countries. While we’ll hold our verdict on the flavours till we savour it, we are ready with a list of must-tries. These include Beef Carpaccio and Kerala Oysters from the almost raw section, multi-hued Veggie Sliders and Granny Smith Apple Cheesecake. Tipsy treats like Irish Malai Kulfi (laced with whiskey and Baileys) and alcohol-soaked gummy bears that float in Yummy Gummy cocktail have us in a tizzy already. We can’t wait for this culinary mix.
