Peeved with the police allegedly dragging their feet on a complaint, a Ghatkopar family got a man abducted to produce him before them.

Two men, posing as police personnel, kidnapped an accused in a criminal case, Kamaluddin Khan, from the premises of the sessions court a month ago right before he could apply for anticipatory bail. The abductors -- Sabbir Chand Khan, 30 and Kaif Ali Bahadur Khan, 38 -- along with two others, then handed him over to the Ghatkopar police, seeking his arrest.

A complaint was filed by the Ghatkopar family two months ago following a clash with Kamaluddin's family. Both sustained injuries and filed cross-complaints against each other.

The Ghatkopar family claimed that they resorted to kidnapping as the police investigation was slow. The police didn't take kindly to them taking law into their hands and booked Sabbir and Kaif for the abduction.

"An inquiry ordered by the Ghatkopar divisional assistant commissioner of police (ACP) concluded that even though Sabbir and Kaif's intention was to help the police, their action amounted to a criminal offence," said Manoj Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1).

According to Kamaluddin, Shabbir and Kaif also extorted Rs 1 lakh from him.

On the basis of the ACP's inquiry report, a case was filed against Shabbir and Kaif under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
