Acting on a tip off, on Thursday night, officers of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Mumbai crime branch raided an illegal telephone exchange company at Trombay Chita camp and arrested two people for running the unit. The cops have also seized three sim boxes, an inverter, model box and 70 sim cards. Investigation has revealed that the unit was being run for the past couple of months.
The accused have been identified as Noor Mohammad Ashraf Shaikh, 35, who runs the company Noor Telecommunications and Nasir Kadar Husain, 30, who works with him.
According to police, the company used to route calls through an Internet connection, instead of the regular phone line, which would help people from abroad make calls to India at much lesser rates. The accused received overseas calls over the Internet and transferred them to receivers in India through an illegal international gateway. Mobile phones and VoIP are linked through the system, which is not permitted under India's telecom laws.
Speaking to mid-day, a police officer said, "The duo has been arrested under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and sections 4, 20 and 25 of the Indian Telegram Act 1885 read with sections 3 and 6 of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933. Their company has resulted in Rs49.14 crore loss for the Indian exchequer."
