After conducting a search operation for almost eight months, the officers of Crime Branch Unit XI arrested a 20-year-old youth from Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old deaf and mute girl. The arrested accused worked as a daily wage labourer at a construction site in Borivali, where the victim often used to play.
According to police, the arrested accused has been identified as Akhilesh Basantu Basfur, 20. The victim lives near the construction site along with her parents. The accused allegedly raped her a number of times at the site.
Last year in November, when she complained of stomach pain, medical tests revealed that she was four months pregnant. Thereafter, her mother filed a complaint at the Borivali police station, following which a case was registered under section 376 of IPC and relevant sections of the POCSO Act. The Crime Branch was also conducting a parallel investigation in the matter.
A Crime Branch officer said, “Initially, we did not have any clue regarding the matter. It was a challenging case. Several teams were working on it. We took help from social activists and NGOs to get information about the accused. Finally, when we were collecting information about construction workers, we came across a site in Borivali. Then we got to know that Akhilesh had left work without informing anyone.”
“The Crime Branch gathered information about the accused and came to know that his native village was in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh. After his arrest, he was brought back to Mumbai and handed over to the Borivali cops,” the officer added.
