You never know what the real picture is till you dig deep. The government’s demonetisation move has surely proved this right in different ways. In yet another case of cheating, a 35-year-old businessman Ajay Kejriwal recently became a victim when he tried to exchange Rs 6.5 lakh worth defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

According to police, Kejriwal, who stays at Evershine Nagar in Malad west, met the accused through a man Sandeep Desai, who resides in the same locality. After the government’s demonetisation decision, Kejriwal wanted to exchange his defunct currencies and that is when Desai told him about the person who would help in the transaction. Thereafter, on last Sunday evening, Kejriwal left for Goregaon where he was scheduled to meet the person.

White paper packed inside
The police said Kejriwal met the person at Veerwani industrial estate on Sunday night and exchanged a briefcase containing the defunct notes. In return, the person gave him a bag containing R100 notes. The moment Kejriwal opened the bag, the conman warned him that the cops were on their rounds, and hence, it was not safe to count the money there.

However, when Kejriwal reached home, he found that there were R100 notes in the front and back of every bundle, while white paper packed inside. He approached the Vanrai police station and registered a case under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of IPC.

An officer said, “We have arrested Desai as he acted as a mediator in the case. We have also got some leads about the accused and will trace him soon.”
