The incident occurred after Ravi Gowda saw Chandu lying with his wife Shantibai around 3 am yesterday. Following the crime, Ravi stood at the spot, waiting to surrender before the police. The husband-wife duo lived on a footpath at Khar 1st road and worked as labourers. They have three children.
Ravi, who had been sleeping with his wife on the footpath and had been suspicious of her affair with Chandu, walked away around 3 am yesterday. Assuming that he would be gone for sometime, Shantibai called Chandu over, but Ravi was hiding just around the corner as he wanted to confirm his suspicions.
“He caught the duo red-handed and picked up a fight with Chandu. Both were under the influence of alcohol. When the fight got out of control, Ravi repeatedly hit Shantibai and Chandu with a paver block on their heads,” said Senior Inspector Daytatre Hargude from Khar police station.
An auto driver saw this , but when he tried to stop Ravi, he allegedly threatened him of dire consequences. “Fearing for his life, the driver approached us. But, by the time we reached the spot, both the victims were lying on the footpath in a pool of blood. We rushed them to Bhabha Hospital. Ravi was arrested immediately,” Hargude said.
While Shantibai breathed her last a few hours after she was admitted to the hospital, Chandu is said to be critical. Ravi told the police that he committed the crime in a fit of rage as he could not bear the thought of his wife having an affair with another man. He has been booked under various sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder).
