Three constables sustained head injuries after a face off with seven burglars in a residential building near Kalwa Naka in the wee hours of Tuesday. The incident occurred at 3 am.

Acting on information received from residents of Matruchaya building that burglars had been spotted in their society, a team of six policemen comprising constables Vishwas Walawalkar, Kailash Baste, and Nandkumar Patil were sent to the spot. Prima facie investigation revealed that seven burglars were inside flat number 6 on the second floor of the building.

An official from Kalwa police station said, “On spotting the cops, the burglars ran for cover. They were armed with iron rods, screwdrivers, paver blocks wrapped in plastic bags and other items, using which they attacked our officials. Three constables were injured in the attack following which the gang managed to escape.”
While Walawalkar sustained major head injuries and was admitted to Prakruti Hospital, Baste was left with a fractured skull and is recuperating at the Fortis Hospital. Patil was discharged after immediate attention and a few tests.
Patil said, “Five constables, along with an officer, were dispatched to the spot following which four of us went up to investigate. In their bid to escape, the thieves attacked us with paver blocks, screwdrivers and materials made of iron. We tried to chase them, but they managed to escape.”
Police claimed during investigation, it emerged that the burglars had complete information about the society and its members. They first broke into flat number 4, followed by flat number 6. Locals said the thieves had come in a truck.
The officer said, “The thieves were aware which flats to target. Residents of both flats were away on vacation. Since they failed to get anything from flat number 4, they targeted flat number 6 and made away with Rs 50,000 and valuables worth Rs 4,000.”
All seven burglars have been booked under sections 458 (lurking, house-trespass or housebreaking by night after preparation for hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint), 395 (punishment for dacoity), 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and several teams have been formed to nab the gang of robbers.
