Mumbai: Central Railway's new AC train will be the shortest of all

The Central Railway Mumbai's Air-Conditioned local train will be the shortest among all. Fixed at the height of 4,270 mm as compared to the 4,283 mm ones of the ones that run on Western Railway.

A senior official said that the new AC local has been customised to requirements of all Central Railway and that this train can run across all sectors with ease.

Explaining the difference in height, an official explained that there were quite a few British-era bridges along the Central Railway that are quite low in height. "This had led to problems of running the AC local that was taller than the traditional non AC local trains," he added.

Officials said that the AC local train for Central Railway was in final stages of preparation and was undergoing tests.

"The new train, with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, will not require many trials and can be put in commuters' service in 15 days of its arrival," a senior official said.

The new AC train has several features, including wider gangways for more people to walk and stand comfortably in crowd, improved luggage racks and much more. It has a Talk Back mechanism, a first for local trains, where commuters in emergency can contact the train guard.
