As the Indian National Trust for Arts and Culture Heritage (INTACH) has failed to meet its October deadline to restore South Mumbai's grade I heritage structure - Flora Fountain - the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to give them an extension to complete the job. Sources said that the final deadline for the Phase I work would now be May. However, the second phase of the work, which includes beautification of the junction, would be completed only in December.
According to civic officials, INTACH was supposed to get specialists from Delhi for the work. But as they could not join in earlier, the restoration process got delayed. However, the officials said that the agency would be given three months' time to finish the work. A civic official said, "They needed two conservators, who were scheduled to come from Delhi. However, as they couldn't make it to the city earlier, the work got delayed. But now they are expected to be here in a week's time."
Chandrashekhar Chore, deputy municipal commissioner (improvements) said, "The work got delayed due to a number of factors. But we are trying to ensure that it's completed at the earliest." Rajan Jaykar, convener of INTACH, said, "We will complete the work by May. We were supposed to meet the DMC on Tuesday, but the meeting got postponed."
