Mumbai: Youth admitted with stomach ache dies, family blames hospital

A youth recently died in a Kandivli civic hospital, leading his family to accuse doctors and staff members of negligence. While the family claims the man was never so seriously ill to have died the same day he was admitted, the staff members claimed the family is lying and the man’s condition was not too good.

The deceased has been identified as Ramakant Mohite (25), a labourer from Malwani who was brought to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli on July 1. Ramakant was suffering from stomach ache and, if his relatives are to be believed, the pain wasn’t too severe.

But, since the family couldn’t afford a private hospital, they had brought him to the civic-run facility. Mohite was admitted to the male general ward and put on glucose drips. At around 10.30 pm the same day, Mohite died during treatment.

His family and relatives started blaming the hospital administration for his demise, alleging that an injection given to him had caused his death. “His condition was never so serious to lead to death. It is the staff members and doctors who gave some injection, which then led to my son dying,” said N Mohite, Ramakant’s father.

‘Lies’
The hospital staff, on the other hand, claimed the patient was quite serious when he was brought in. “He was suffering from severe stomach pain and seemed to be in a grave condition. If the relatives say he was not so serious, they are lying,” said a ward boy, on the condition of anonymity.

The nursing staff also told mid-day that the hospital administration is threatening to transfer them to another hospital because of the incident. “We were moved here from Bhagwati Hospital when it shut down. Now we are made scapegoats.

We will call for a strike if anyone of us is transferred or held responsible for the death of the patient,” added another ward boy. The body was sent to the Bhagwati post-mortem centre to ascertain the cause of death, but the exact reason will only be revealed after the Kalina forensic laboratory releases the laboratory results of the viscera analysis of the body.

Meanwhile, Mohite’s family approached the Malwani police station, accusing the hospital of causing Mohite’s death. The police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the matter. “The investigation is going on.

We are going through the chain of events to see if there was human error involved, which led to Mohite’s death,” said an officer from the police station. A banner has also been put up outside the hospital, accusing the hospital doctors and staffers of causing Mohite’s death by negligence.
