Tourists, who hoped to show the lions at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) to their children this summer vacation, will have to wait for more than a month. Due to the ongoing repair work of the fences along the safari area, the lion safari, which has remained shut for the past two months, will continue to remain shut for a while.

The tiger safari, however, remains open, for which the SGNP authorities have slashed rates. The tiger and lion safaris at SGNP are important and popular tourist attractions during vacations.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience but the lion safari has been kept closed as the important work of repairing the fences along the safari area is in progress. Once the work is complete, people will be able to enjoy the safari ride again and spot the lion,” said S Deore , superintendent of tiger and lion safari.
As of now, tourists’ options at the SGNP include the tiger safari, taking a walk in the tourists zone, visiting the nature interpretation centre, visiting the Gandhi Tekdi, enjoying a ride in the mini train and visiting the Kanheri Caves.
Visitor speaks
Mukesh Waghela, who visited the safari with his family, said, “I came to SGNP because I wanted to show my daughter the lion as she loves them a lot. But it was only after reaching the safari counter that I came to know that it’s shut. The authorities should complete the work at the earliest. The good part is that they are charging only for tiger safari now.”
