A 14-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide after his mother scolded him for playing games on his mobile phone, and asked him to study. On Sunday, Aniket Singh went to the bathroom after she took away his phone, and hanged himself with a string.

According to police officials from the Tulinj police station in Nalasopara East, the boy was a Std IX student of a local school. The Singhs live in Oswal Nagari. Officials said that since Sunday morning, Aniket had been playing games and loud music, and watching movies on his mobile phone.
His mother told him to put the phone away and concentrate on studies, as his exams were starting the following week. However, Aniket ignored her. At 4 pm, she scolded him severely and took his phone away.

Police said Aniket, who was short-tempered, went to the bathroom. After over 20 minutes, when he did not come out, his mother went to check on him. She forced the door open and found him hanging. She called neighbours and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
A relative said, “Aniket’s mother and father are in shock. His mother feels guilty about scolding him. No one can understand how he could take such an extreme step. His mother was inconsolable and fell unconscious. She is being treated.”
A police officer said, “After the post-mortem, preliminary reports showed it was a clear case of suicide. On Monday, the body was handed over to the family. In a few days, we will record the statement of his parents.”
