Mumbai: Second Jet crewmember hurt in Brussels blast returns home

Jet Airways’ crewmember Amit Motwani, who was injured in the Brussels airport blast on March 22, landed at Mumbai airport yesterday and was immediately taken to Breach Candy Hospital for treatment of his wounded left eye.

Khar resident Motwani was until Tuesday being treated at a hospital in Belgium’s Antwerp since the accident, which killed 32 people and injured over 300.

A team of doctors, headed by senior general physician Dr Jamshed Sunavala, will take care of Motwani’s treatment, which will include eye surgery. Dr Sunavala refused to disclose any information regarding his health, while saying, “The family wants privacy and we have been asked not to divulge any information.”

Motwani arrived in Mumbai by Jet Airways flight (9W 123) from Paris at 7.27 am and like his colleague and fellow survivor in the attack, Nidhi Chaphekar, he too was taken to the hospital by an ambulance as soon as he landed.

According to sources, the Jet crewmember is under high security in the hospital. “He has been kept in a VVIP room on the fifth floor. His condition is normal, as he had undergone treatment for three months in Antwerp. He has injuries in his legs too but they are getting better,” said a doctor, who is part of the team treating Motwani.

Motwani and his family members refused to talk to the media. “We have been strictly prohibited from allowing anyone to his room,” said a nurse from the hospital.
