Mumbai: Prepare for more failures on Central Railway this week

While monsoon has already affected train travel, commuters of Central Railway might be in for a worse week. Two coaches of a Kasara-Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) train disconnected while in motion yesterday and resulted in the cancellation of the mega block, which means necessary repairs were not made.

The CR officials said the 12-car fast local, which underwent overhauling in November last year, uncoupled between fifth and sixth coaches between Diva and Parsik tunnel at 8.02 am, and the train came to a halt. “None of the passengers sustained any injuries but three local trains were held up. Also, 35 trains were cancelled on a day train services were already decreased,” said a CR official.

Fast trains towards CST were diverted to the slow line from Kalyan to Thane. “Our staff immediately reached the site for restoration work. Services on the affected section were cleared at 10.08 am. We had to cancel the mega block on the Thane-Kalyan slow line,” said Narendra Patil, chief PRO, CR.

Potential problem
The mega block, planned between Thane and Kalyan from 11.30 am to 3.30 pm, was cancelled and maintenance work was not carried out. Jobs like inspection of rail tracks, overhead cables and level crossings, weren’t done. Now, according to officials, since the maintenance work hasn’t been carried out, there could be a chance of technical failures between Thane-Kalyan route.

“These are routine maintenance jobs that are carried out every week. They were cancelled but we will push it for next week and ensure it doesn’t affect train movement this week,” said AK Singh, spokesperson, CR.
