While at the time of going to press Shaikh was yet to undergo surgery, the other two labourers were getting treated at Rajawadi Hospital.
The incident took place at around 3.30am yesterday when a multi-axle trailer carrying goods, which weighed around 30 tonnes, was on Yashwantrao Chavan Highway and was going towards Panvel Lane.
Fire officials said the trailer driver lost control of the vehicle and it dashed against the FoB. Being heavily loaded, the vehicle tilted and the pillar it was carrying fell on Shaikh.
Fire officials began the rescue operation at around 4 am and it took them around four hours to clear the goods and iron pillar with a crane.
“The goods that weighed around 30 tonnes had to be moved with a crane but thankfully we rescued the man trapped beneath a heavy pillar. He was admitted to Sion Hospital and the other two, who had suffered minor injuries, were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment,” said P S Rahangdale, chief fire officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade.
Doctors at Sion Hospital confirmed that Shaikh hadn’t suffered any other major injuries apart from fractures in both his legs.
“His right leg, which was trapped under the pillar, has suffered multiple fractures. Also, his left leg, which has also suffered a few fractures, will be operated on along with his right one. As of now he is admitted in the ICU of the hospital and depending on his condition, doctors will take a decision on his surgery,” said the administrative medical officer of the hospital.
