Motorists had been facing mile-long jams for the past three days, as the southbound stretch of the flyover underwent repairs on its expansion joints. The Public Works Department authorities were confident that the work would be complete and motorists would be allowed to use the flyover post 6 am today.

PWD Engineer S S Deshmukh said, “We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the public travelling via the WEH due to the ongoing repair work on Prabhodhankar Thackeray flyover at the Kalanagar junction. The work is on in full swing and by Monday 6 am it will be completed. The flyover will be open and motorists won’t have to face any traffic jams.”

Freaky Friday
On Friday, motorists were stranded in a 4-km long jam on the southbound stretch of WEH between Bandra and Kandivli due to the repairs at the flyover. mid-day had reported the chaos on the Western Express Highway ‘Friday torture to escape Monday Blues’, June 4.

While the Traffic police drew flak from irate motorists, the PWD authorities claimed that the repair work was urgent and they had undertaken the rectification on Friday to avoid a disastrous traffic mess on Monday, which is the beginning of the week.

“By Sunday afternoon the work of repairing the four expansion joints of the flyover was completed, and the remaining two expansion joints will be completed before 6 am on Monday,” a PWD Engineer said.

North is next
The PWD also has plans to repair the expansion joints of the northbound stretch of the Prabodhankar Thackeray flyover but the date is yet to be decided.

“The expansion joints on the northbound stretch of Prabodhankar Thackeray flyover also need repairs and we are in talks with traffic police for this. We might start the repair work of the expansion joints after the monsoon, provided we get NOC from the traffic department,” said a source. The traffic department personnel feel that if the northbound stretch of the flyover is closed, then there will be more chaos and cars would be lined up all the way to the BWSL. As a lot of vehicles use this arterial road during evening peak hours, the traffic department may not give the NOC so easily.
