Mumbai: Online admission process for FYJC ends

The final round of online junior college admissions took place on Tuesday as the last online merit list was released; 27,945 students were allocated seats in this round. Surprisingly, after three rounds of online admissions, over 74,000 seats in all three streams have gone vacant this year. Last year too close to 60,000 seats had gone vacant.

"Everybody wants seats only in a handful of colleges, while the rest of the colleges are ignored. After students had finished applying to colleges online, close to 40,000 seats had no takers," said N B Chavan, deputy director of education. He added that many of these seats seem to be from junior colleges attached to schools, which find very few takers.

Apart from this, many colleges believe that more and more class X students are open towards vocational courses too. "The various vocational courses available attract many students, which might be one of the reasons for so many seats going vacant this year. It's a welcome trend," said the principal of a city college. He added that it was surprising to see over 35,000 Commerce seats going vacant, as these seats are always in demand.

Of the 2.03 lakh students who had applied for junior college admissions online, 214 students have been left without a seat in the three lists. These students can now opt for offline admissions and approach individual colleges after July 17.
