The stray dog within the new police quarters in Andheri (East) was mercilessly beaten up by a resident of the police quarters on Tuesday, causing blindness in one eye and other grievous injuries. The man named Mukesh Dev allegedly thrashed the dog with a stick and later locked it inside the toilet. Apparently, onlookers tried to intervene, but the man paid no heed. The dog managed to escape later.
Animal welfare NGOs were alerted about the cruelty. A volunteer working with an animal welfare group even tried to lodge an FIR, but the police did not register the complaint. Finally on Thursday evening, the police, under pressure, registered an FIR by Bhavin Gathani of NGO Karuna Parivaar.
Shirley Menon of NGO SOS said, "Despite lodging the FIR on Thursday, the police are yet to take any action against the accused, who is roaming scot-free. The authorities should take animal cruelty cases seriously so that a strong message goes out to the public and no one dares to treat animals in this way. "
Menon has written a letter to the Mumbai commissioner of police, requesting him to take immediate action against the accused. "The police authorities are just dragging their feet on the complaint, and what is shocking is the fact that despite providing the details of the accused behind this brutal act, no action has been taken."
The dog is currently undergoing treatment at a private kennel in Malad West.
