The mobile phone, on silent mode, was kept in the glove compartment of the scooty; police used the phone's location to trace the vehicle and nab the culprit in 24 hours
A mobile phone kept on silent mode helped the police trace a stolen scooty from Vasai’s Chinchoti area. Yogesh Kanjar, owner of an automobile service centre, found his Activa scooty missing on Friday from its usual parking spot near his Poisar residence. He approached the police and lodged a complaint.

“I suddenly recalled that I had kept a mobile phone in the scooty, which I use for emergency and work purpose. It is a low-cost phone but it helped me find my bike,” said Kanjar, adding that he will file an appeal today in the Borivli court to recover his vehicle.
Stolen vehicle
On Thursday night around 10-10:30, 51-year-old Kanjar returned from service centre based in Mahavir Nagar and parked his bike near his home. On Friday morning, he found it missing after which he started a search in the nearby areas and upon failing to find it, approached the Kandivli police.
“While registering the FIR, he informed us about the mobile phone kept in the vehicle. We asked him to give a call on that number. It was ringing and we traced the bike to Vasai using mobile surveillance network,” said an official from Kandivli police station.
The accused identified as Suresh Devendran was arrested on Friday.
Knew each other
Devendran and Kanjar knew each other, as they were residents of the same locality, Poisar village. Devendran, had a house and a fast food shop in Poisar and another house in Vasai. On Thursday night, he got drunk with two of his friends and offered them a joyride on the scooty to his Vasai home.
Police has not filed any case against the two friends since they were not aware that the bike was stolen.
“However, a case under IPC section 379 (theft) has been registered against Devendran. The bike has been seized,” said Assistant Police Inspector Pardeep Kerkar, Kandivali Police station, adding that the accused was remanded to judicial custody after producing him in the court and further investigation is going on.
