Two members of a fatka gang operating between Govandi and Mankhurd stations were arrested by the Mankhurd Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Monday.
RPF officials said they had deployed their personnel between the two stations for over a week following a raft of complaints, and caught Mohammad Adil Ansari, 28, from at Govandi and Irfan Qureshi of Mankhurd, 22, in the act.
They said Ansari was adept at knocking off mobile phones from the hands of commuters standing at train entrances. He was caught stealing a phone worth R5,000 of a 20-year-old commuter.
Qureshi was apprehended at 12.50 pm from the up local line while stealing a mobile phone of a 35-year-old passenger between Mankhurd and Govandi.
An RPF official said Qureshi had two stolen mobile phones in his possession. “He confessed he had stolen a phone on Sunday as well as another around a month ago.”
Ansari and Qureshi were handed over to the Vashi Government Railway Police, who registered a case against them under Section 392 (robbery) of the IPC.
