Mumbai: Height difference nails aspiring cop who cheated in physical test

A difference of a couple of inches in height helped the police nail an aspiring cop who had sent an imposter in his place for a physical test.

Bhausaheb Barkade, 27, a candidate from Sangli, was among 218 people selected after the Government Railway Police Constabulary physical fitness test held on April 3 and 4. The selected candidates were called between May 1 and 5 for document verification, but the police found Barkade appeared different in the photos on his exam pass and on his documents.

GRP officials scanned the CCTV footage from the physical fitness test and found that an impersonator had appeared for Barkade's physical test. After being called repeatedly, Barkade presented himself before the selectors on July 19, and and claimed that he had gained weight, which is why he looked different.

But Barkade was nailed when his height was measured again. His height taken during the examination was 169.7 cm, but when the police checked it again, it was 164.3 cm, a difference of a couple of inches.

The GRP lodged a case with the Pantnagar Police, under Sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. Police are looking for the impersonator.
