The Central Railway authorities shut services between Wadala and CST stations to clear the track, thus affecting the morning peak hours too. Ballast train is used to put stones between the rail track and cement sleepers, thus acting like a cushion for the train while moving.
Narendra Patil, chief PRO of CR, tweeted stating that "Harbour line passengers are permitted to travel on Main line as Harbour service between CST to Wadala affected due to derailment of ballast train at CST, services are being run till Wadala station".
The officials claimed that train services resumed from 8 am onwards on both Up and Down lines. Sources yet said that they expect the situation to remain critical on Harbour line despite starting train services as there would be speed restrictions couple with huge crowd surging at stations.
