Mumbai: Green corridor ensures first ever inter-state heart transplant in one and half hour

Mumbai witnessed its first ever interstate and fifth in all heart transplant on Friday night when the heart of a brain dead patient from Surat was transferred to Mumbai within one hour and 32 minutes.

58-year-old recipient from Mumbai suffering from dilated Cardiomyopathy and admitted at Fortis Hospital Mulund received a new lease of life after a well coordinated transit between Surat to Mumbai opened doors for an organ transplant channel between the two states, Gujrat and Maharashtra.

Post receiving the consent from the family members of the doner who was pronounced brain dead in Mahavir hospital of Surat, Airport and Traffic authorities of the two states came together swiftly to create a green corridor. With a ready road map, the heart apparently started its journey from Surat at 10.36pm and reached the airport within nine minutes. Being flown by a chartered flight that took off at 10.50pm, the beating heart landed Mumbai at around 11.43pm.

Traffic authorities of Mumbai jumped in action once an ambulance gate number 8 of the domestic airport collected the heart. Travelling from Santacruz- Chembur Link Road to Eastern Express Highway and even tually from Airoli Junction, the ambulance carrying he heart reached Fortis Hospital Mulund at 12.08am. Within 1 hour and 32 minutes, the heart travelled the distance of 269km and reached straight into the hands of Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, CVTS Surgeon.

Jadhav and Dr Anvay Mule, Chief of Cardiac Surgery conducted the surgery which concluded at 3.45am and the patient was moved to the ICU by 5am. Talking about the surgery, Mulay said, "Kindness and willingness of the donor's family has helped in making the fifth transplant happen. We need more such courageous families to come forth and help save & enrich more lives. The surgery has been successful; the patient is now stable and will be kept under observation for the next 48-72 hours".

Mr Sukhmeet Sandhu, Regional Director, Fortis Healthcare, Region-West and East, said, "I congratulate and thank the teams that worked behind the scenes to create history. Team at ZTCC, Medical Teams, Medical Social Workers and particularly the Airport & Traffic Authorities at Surat and Mumbai who worked in perfect symphony to accomplish this remarkable feat. This perfect example of teamwork has helped save and enrich a precious life".
