Nilofer Hafiz Shaikh (35), in her third month of pregnancy, had complained against the accused regarding their illegal construction. Angry, the four accused allegedly assaulted her in her home

Four persons in Bandra allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman last week after she filed a complaint against them in the civic body. And while the woman got admitted to a hospital to treat her injuries, they, in turn, filed a case with the Bandra police against the woman and her family, alleging that it was they who had handed out the beating.

The incident occurred on March 27 with Nilofer Shaikh (35), who is currently three months pregnant. Nilofer had lodged a complaint in the BMC against four persons — Shahid Ali Cendole, Aafrin Cendole, Shakir Ali Cendole and Kaaynat Cendole — alleging they were involved in illegal construction.

Both families stay near MHADA ground on S V Road in Bandra (West). Officials from BMC visited the site and deemed that the illegal structure had to be demolished. However, they revealed the complainant’s name to the Cendoles. The furious family entered Nilofer’s house and started assaulting her and her family.

“They began beating me up and my father, a senior citizen. They attacked me with sharp weapons. They said, “Tune hamaare khilaaf BMC mein complaint kiya na? Bahar nikal!” (You complained against us in the BMC. Come out now!),” Nilofer told mid-day.

Nilofer claimed she went to the Bandra police to register a complaint, but the cops didn’t pay much heed. “As I was injured badly and am also pregnant, I couldn’t wait for long at the police station and got admitted to a civic-run hospital,” she said.

From victim to accused
When she was discharged on March 29, Nilofer received the shock of her life when Bandra police informed her that an FIR had been registered against her by the Cendoles, alleging that she, her father, Sher Ali (65), and her 26-year-old brother had assaulted the family.

In a fit of rage, she consumed phenol and landed back in hospital. When police learnt of her bid to commit suicide, they then registered her FIR against the Cendoles on the same day i.e. March 29. The next day, Nilofer also met Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria, bringing to his notice the case registered against her and her family.

Nilofer showed the top cop proof that her brother was not even in the area when the assault he allegedly committed was said to have taken place. Nilofer said the Bandra police did not entertain her complaint when she had gone to them.

Now, Maria has ordered the police to conduct a proper inquiry into the matter. The victim claimed her family has an old dispute with Shahid Ali and Shakir Ali Cendole over their alleged illegal construction work. She said Maria had assured her he would look into the matter.
