Mumbai: Former dy dean of Sion Hospital plunges to death

A 58-year-old former deputy dean of Sion Hospital fell to his death from his fifth floor apartment at Parel yesterday. The police are still trying to ascertain whether this is a case of suicide or an accident.

Police officials said the deceased, Umesh Rangapai, lived at Mahalaxmi building in Parel with his wife, and he was undergoing treatment at KEM Hospital for hypertension. Yesterday, he had gone to KEM along with his wife, but returned home alone as soon as the check-up was over.

The incident took place between 10 am and 12 noon, after which his wife returned to find he had plunged to his death. An officer from the Bhoiwada police station said, “Prima facie, it seems to be a suicide, but we think that it could also be an accident, as he might have slipped and fallen.

In the course of investigations, we learnt that the deceased was being treated for hypertension as well.”Rangapai was the deputy dean at Sion Hospital until about six months ago, when he retired from the position.

Investigations also revealed that he hadn’t received pension since the time of his retirement, because of which he would have to make frequent trips to Sion Hospital to follow up on the issue. As of now, the police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing investigation.
