Mumbai: Cop's phone stolen from police station

In an embarrassing incident, a police officer’s mobile phone was stolen from the officers’ room inside the MRA Marg police station.

Since the seniors were reluctant to file a complaint that shows the police station in bad light, even the FIR was registered three days after the theft. Their efforts to trace the location of the phone have so far been unsuccessful.

The officer is a sub-inspector at MRA Marg police station, located near CST. The incident — which raises questions on the security arrangements within the police station — occurred in the first week of November.

According to the police, the theft occurred when the sub-inspector went up to the officers’ room to change his clothes, after finishing his duty at 8 pm. “There is an officers’ room on the first floor of the police station, where only officers are allowed.

The sub-inspector went there to change his clothes. He kept his phone (a Sony Xperia worth Rs 25,000) on the table. Another policeman asked him for some papers, so he went down to give them. When he returned, he saw that his phone was missing.

The CCTV in the police station was not working at the time of the incident,” said a cop from MRA marg police station. The officer reported the incident to his seniors and insisted on filing an FIR. However, the cops did not register a complaint in the matter and asked the officer to wait and search for the phone.

They tried to trace its location, but their efforts proved futile. A police officer said, “Finally, three days after the incident, an FIR was registered in the matter under Section 380 (Theft) of the IPC against an unknown person. We mainly suspect an outsider’s role in the matter, but some cop could have done it. Outsiders are not allowed in the officers’ room.”
