In what is one step ahead towards the ambitious coastal road project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday submitted the environment impact assessment (EIA) report to MCZMA (Maharashtra Coastal Zonal Management Authority) for approval.

Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee made a presentation before the MCZMA about the EIA as well as the environment management programme. The presentation was to explain what mitigation measures for environmental hazards will be taken during the project.

"Mangroves are a concern for the state government as well as for us. We explained to them how many mangroves are going to be affected and how will they be transplanted," Mukherjee said.

The 33.2 km coastal road starting from Nariman Point to Kandivali will go through mangroves and coast line of the city for which it needs to get permission from MCZMA.

Recently, the central government has cleared the way for land reclamation for the project and issued gazette notification. Now, if the MCZMA approves it, the proposal will then be sent to the Central government.
