While other kids spent their summer vacation watching movies, 30 kids from a BMC school had a turn at making films instead. During the 10-day workshop, students of Nityananda Marg MPS English medium school in Andheri East, tried their hands at being both, behind and in front of the camera.

From Std V to IX, the children were divided in five groups that wrote and worked on their own film script. The five films are based on bullying, Swacch Bharat, education for girls, water conservation and helping others. The films will be shown to other BMC schools and also be sent to international festivals. The workshop was part of a tie-up with Mumbai-based NGO Parisar Asha. Aarti Savur, CEO of the NGO, said, “We have been associated with this school since 2015. Film is a powerful medium that helps students learn better.”

After interacting with actors Shakti Singh and Rohit Pathak, many of the kids say they want to join Bollywood when they grow up.

“I now know how to operate the camera and edit a film. I hope to become a director when I grow up,” said Akash Maretha, one of the little filmmakers.

“It was the experience of a lifetime. We met so many personalities and learnt so much about films,” said another student, Kamlesh Gupta.

Farzana Shaikh, the mother of a student said, “We don’t have the money to make our children big film industry people. But seeing their first film makes us proud.”
