In a rare combination of smarts, an alert advocate and a well-placed beat marshal joined forces to avert a robbery and nab the accused red-handed in the act.
Advocate Ramchandar Yadav's office in the Koldongri area on Sahar Road in Andheri is just above the A1 Mobile Store. Late on Saturday night, at around 2.30 am, when Yadav was still working in the office, he heard some suspicious sounds.
On inspecting, he sees a light in the store is switched on, even though the store is shut. He then calls over the beat marshal nearby for help
"I peeped out from the window to find few people trying to hide behind a parked vehicle near the store. So I stepped down and saw that the shutter was closed, but light from inside was streaming in, which immediately created a doubt in my head and I wondered what my next step should be. Just then, I saw Vile Parle's beat marshal Ravindra Patil and asked him to help.
The marshal took matters in hand and informed both the Vile Parle and Andheri police, who surrounded the shop. Meanwhile, the storeowner was called in and asked to open the showroom, after which they found one thief inside. He had created a bundle of all the cellphones in the store and was about to escape when he was stopped in his tracks.
The marshal alerts both Vile Parle and Andheri police stations, which send teams and surround the spot. The storeowner is also called to open the store
His accomplices, however, were lucky and managed to get away. Since the crime was committed in the jurisdiction of Andheri police station, the thief was handed over to them and a case was registered against him.
