The Mumbai fire brigade rescued 26 people after a part of a chawl collapsed in Malad's Kharodi village on Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 8 pm when the eastern portion of the chawl in Austin Compound started deteriorating. The ground +2 structure collapsed in parts. The debris blocked the exit of the house, trapping people on the upper floors. The chawl had several families residing inside when the incident happened. The fire brigade was called in around 8.20 pm.
Rescue operations
Fire brigade senior officer Naik, said, "We had trouble reaching there since the area has really narrow lanes. So as per procedure, we parked our fire engine away and reached the spot. A crowd had assembled and those trapped upstairs were screaming. We used a ladder and rescued 26 people. Our firemen carried so many on their shoulders."
Nobody is reported trapped or missing.
The brigade has evacuated the chawl and the ward office's building and factory department is now working on assessment of structure.
