Mumbai crime: Woman raped

The accused, identified as Mohammad Jhakir Ali (38), is a Tilak Nagar resident at Goregaon (West). Ali was arrested in July for allegedly raping the survivor’s older sister and was released on bail in September. Cops believe that he then befriended the 23-year-old, who reportedly had a strained relationship with her sister, in order to take revenge. A week before the incident, Ali had offered to give free computer training to the woman and had promised to get her a job with a good salary. The survivor is a graduate and got married a year ago.

“On Thursday, around 4 pm, the survivor reached Ali’s house for computer training when he allegedly forced himself on her and then ran away. Later, around 6.30 pm when the woman was coming to Goregaon police station, the accused intercepted her and gave a R35,000 cheque, telling her not to file a complaint against him. She tried to nab him then, but he managed to escape again,” said an official from Goregaon police station, adding that the accused’s wife had divorced him after he was arrested for rape in July.

Sub-inspector Shrirang Kesarkar of Goregaon police station, said, “We sent the survivor to Cooper Hospital for the medical exam. After the report confirmed rape, we registered the case under Section 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code. The accused is currently absconding but we will nab him very soon.”
