Mumbai: 20-year-old found hanging by family

The police found no suicide note or anything else to suggest why he took the extreme step; they are currently scanning his phone for clues.

A 20-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling at his Kalachowki residence in the early hours of Sunday. Other members of his family were asleep in the house but did not realise what had happened until it was time to wake him up.

Darshan Katkar, an FYBA student and resident of Dattaram Lad Marg, lived with his mother, father and three sisters in a one-room apartment, but he would sleep alone in the large loft over the room. The night before he took the drastic step, he had gone for a friend’s birthday party and returned home late at 1.30 am, for which his mother had scolded him.

The family went to sleep and around 6 am, Darshan’s sister climbed to the loft to wake him, when she saw him hanging by a saree. The family brought Darshan down and informed the police about the death around 6.30 am. The police are trying to ascertain a motive for suicide, since they found no suicide note.

They have taken possession of Darshan’s phone to check for clues on what drove him to take the extreme step. A a case of accidental death has been registered, said Police Inspector Suryankant Tarade from Kalachowki police station, adding, “Darshan is an first-year Bachelor of Arts student.

We are yet to take the family’s statement as they are not in a condition to speak after such a huge loss. No suicide note has been found but we have recovered his phone. We are investigating the reason behind the suicide.”

The cops said that Darshan’s parents said they had not observed anything unusual in his behaviour to suggest he would take such a step. However, another cop, on condition of anonymity, said, “Darshan wasn’t working anywhere and he had also failed his college exams last year. After that, he guarded an ATM for a month.”
