The murder suspect, Magdul Sardar Ali (30), had surrendered himself last month to the Malad-based Kurar police, admitting that he had killed his 29-year-old friend Sadik Ali and dumped his body in a nullah in August. This paper had reported about the case on November 21 (‘Mumbai man confesses to killing best friend, cops shoo him away, twice’).

According to the police officials, around 2 pm on Wednesday, civic workers were cleaning the nullah behind the mall when they found a decomposed male body. They informed the police, who identified the deceased by his clothes.

Police said Magdul, who lives with his wife in Govandi, was having an affair with a woman, but after a month she broke off the relationship and started an affair with his friend Sadik, a resident of Ahmedabad who regularly visited Mumbai for work.

When Magdul got to know of their affair, he took Sadik behind the mall under the pretence of drinking alcohol and slashed Sadik’s neck with a sharp knife and dumped his body in the drain. Cops said that after the incident, Magdul started having haunting nightmares about Sadik, and decided to turn himself in.

On November 19, he went to Govandi’s Shivaji Nagar police to confess, but the cops sent him to Dindoshi police, saying that the crime fell under their field of command. When Magdul reached Dind-oshi police, the cops there sent him to Kurar police station, again over the issue of jurisdiction. Magdul was finally arrested by Kurar police.

Senior Inspector Jaychandra Kathe said, “Magdul Ali worked as a tailor. He killed his best friend after he came to know that his ex-girlfriend was having an affair with him. A missing complaint for Sadik Ali was registered with Govandi police, so we arrested Magdul. When we found Sadik’s body on Wednesday, we got confirmation that he had killed him.”
